Petanque - A sport for all ages
The sport is really easy to learn, within 10 minutes the basic principles are picked up and novices can then be left to play. Nobody wants to play a new sport that takes hours and hours of learning. The other factor involves the expense, or more importantly, the lack of it. Once you have purchased a set of boule they usually last you years. There are then varying levels that you can play the sport at depending upon ability, time, other commitments etc. The basic level is social, where people maybe turn up and have a few games, a few drinks and a chat.
Locally, running for the first time this year, is the Suffolk Coastal Petanque League. In this organisation we have two divisions covering both the Northern and Southern areas of the Suffolk Coastal area.
Teams consist of just a minimum of 4 players. Matches are played on a home and away basis with games being scheduled from April until September, but due to the small size of the divisions matches are only once every 2nd or 3rd week.
The sport also finds the whole concept favourable to pub and club landlords and committees. This is mainly due to the fact that if a potential venue has a gravelled car park or similar area, then the building a piste is also avoided.
If this article has interested you enough, be it as a prospective player, club, team or pub landlord, then please contact Simon Fletcher @
imogenlewiskira@sky.com or write to 18 Melville Road, Ipswich, IP4 1PN for
further details. We can arrange a 'Learn To Play' or 'Come And Try' event for any organisation that so wishes or friendly matches if you already have a group of petanque players.

Brantham Leisure Centre is looking into areas that they would like to develop in the community. The following roles have been set up and volunteers are sought.
Charity Steward - The Centre It is looking to support /have a chosen Charity/s that we can all focus our attention and energies toward. Something relevant to people locally. We seek a candidate willing to be the focal point of these activities and liaise with the chosen charities. The Centre itself has a social committee and the Teams would support and promote these events.
If people have ideas for Registered Charities with local relevance primarily for human support then please contact the undersigned. We also have a number of Charitable activities already hosted at the Centre. The role would include co-ordination with these groups.
Youth Development Officer - The village is growing and we recognise that there are few structured venues to provide a place where young people can meet in safety with organised activity. We seek a Youth Development Officer willing to achieve CRB accreditation. The role would be to create at least one evening a week for organised activity. This might be table tennis or basket ball or village football or arranging structured trips.
The Centre plays a vital role by allowing all age groups to meet and develop mutual respect and understanding. We seek forward thinking by investing in young people who are vital to all our futures.
Events Committee - The events committee seek support members to host events. With the loss of ICI Recreation Club the village has a huge void with regard to provide a home for social events. We are presently refurbishing the first floor events room. The Team would manage a number of events at seasonal times of the year for the benefit of and with respect to the local community. Presently Alison Kanaris and Janice Burman are at the heart of this group but really need more help planning and executing some high quality events.
Club Extension Project Manager - The Centre is moving the next stage with its development plans. We seek an experienced Project Manager to programme and deliver the extension and refurbishment works.
Club Historian - The Centre has a unique history. We seek a candidate willing to collate and develop the record base for future generations. To promote the Club and to take care of its historical artifacts. With time develop a short guide to its past and to embelish and promote the importance of our life members.
For any of the above roles please could you contact The Secretary : Brantham Leisure Centre , New Village , Brantham, Manningtree, Essex C011 1TD
