August September 2008: News - Women's Institute

WI July Meeting

What a busy few months we have had, in early June the National Federation of Women's Institutes was held at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, a representative from Brantham WI went on behalf of the Constable group to join over 6000 other representatives and to take part in the resolutions to be discussed and to vote on one which will have the WI's backing the eventual resolution to be passed was the:-

‘Inappropriate imprisonment of the severely mentally ill' - Moved by the Federation Representatives on behalf of Norfolk Federation Board.

There was also varies speakers throughout the day and a very funny Sandi Toksvig brought about some light relief after the sometimes controversial and emotional debates of the day. At the end of the day we were all presented with an oak sapling each, provided by the Woodland Trust and Sainsbury's, can you image what 6000 ladies looked like with an small tree in their bags, we looked like a small forest on the move!

Later in the month a small group of us went for a BBQ at Mr Denham's a local Ipswich butcher we sampled some of his meats he had prepared (not just burgers and sausages) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Then a few days later we had our strawberry tea held in one of our members lovely garden (thank you Margaret), visitors from East Bergholt, Capel St Mary and Bentley also came, the weather was a little on the windy side and not quite as warm as we would have liked, but we were not down hearted, we tucked into our strawberries and cream, thanks to Doreen for organising those they were really scrummy. A raffle and some competitions were held and once again every one had a lovely time.

Next came the quiz night at Needham Market, this is a yearly event with teams from all over the Suffolk County, a team went from Brantham, no major prizes were won but they did not disgrace themselves and more importantly they  had a lovely evening and met up with friends from other WI Groups.

This week at our regular monthly meeting we had two lovely people from Jodee Crafts, John and Doris Small are members of the Essex Craftsmen and Egg Crafters Guilds, they went on to explain to us how they created these wonderful eggs, one was in the form of a fairground carousel, a jewellery chest had been made out of an ostrich egg, also many beautiful filigree designs with flowers and beads, mainly seed pearls, and all lined with velvet and silk. Very interesting people very talented and the patience of saints to make those wonderful creations, many thanks to them both for coming along.
